The Indian fisheries industry has achieved significant progress towards modernization and sustained economic development via deliberate and combined government & private initiatives. The GOI, led by Hon’ble Premier Shri Narendra Modi, has inaugurated a new Signature Plan for a considerable expenditure of Rs 20,050 Crores to grow Fisheries Holistically in India, under the leadership of Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana.

The purpose of PMMSI is to promote a green, financially feasible & socially sustainable society that makes significant contributions to the economy & well for fishermen and fishermen, and to the fitness and food welfare of the nation. This is the historical highest expenditure in fisheries. This program will run across the nation over a five-year term, aimed at achieving 70 lakh tonnes of further fish output, the twinning of fishery export to Rs. 1,00,000 Crores & 55 lakh jobs towards socio-economic growth.

Feature of the scheme

It is a plan for the concentrated and long-term growth of the nation’s fishing industry. As a section of the Atma Nirbhar Bharat, a total of 20,050 crore rupees has also been approved for its execution across all states and union provinces over a five-year period, from Financial Year 2020-21 to Financial Year 2024-25. The plan concentrates on beneficiary-oriented operations in the ocean, inland, & aquaculture fishing. It intends to use ‘cluster or region techniques.’

Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana: Objectives

The scheme aims at supplementing or increasing agriculture, modernizing processing and reducing agricultural waste, and using the capability in the fisheries sector. The government planned to introduce a robust fishery organizational structure and monitor the gaps throughout the value chain for Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). The government has clearly shown that the ‘Neel Kranti’ or the ‘Blue Revolution’ is the world’s leader in fish production. It includes the Food Safety, Food Parks, and Infrastructure systems of MoFPI.

The Scheme also will concentrate on several new areas and new activities as well, such as certification, traceability, and accreditation, salt or Alkaline aquaculture, genetic improvement and nucleus reproductions, start-ups for fish farming, promotion of fish food consumption, marking, IG in fish, incorporated aquaculture parks, integrated vector fishing village advancement, state-official fishing activities.
